Clara Zervigon

Writer, Researcher, Food Justice Advocate

Working for change makers, history buffs, and food lovers alike.

I am a writer, researcher, and food justice advocate based in Los Angeles, CA. Like many in my generation — who came into adulthood when rents are unmanageable, climate change is everywhere, and people are generally fed up with the state of things — I hope to leverage my skills and create a career that is focused on changing the world for the better. For me, this means writing about the intersection of food, environment, and justice.

What makes me happiest is working with publications with a mission, non-profits with innovative ideas, and brands with a new perspective on how things “should be done.” I also enjoy writing more lighthearted lifestyle and entertainment pieces and spending time in the kitchen — I am human, after all!

Currently open to work in volunteer coordination, food recovery, food justice, environmental justice, or potentially something else progress-oriented. Shoot me a message if that sounds like you!

Areas of Expertise

Food History

Mapping food history shows us not only how culinary techniques and ingredients have evolved throughout time, but how cultures have spread, societal norms have changed, environments have degraded, and politics has changed the course of the world. From rich primary sources like medieval cookbooks and religious texts to the lived experiences shared on modern food blogs, I use disparate sources to establish a clear timeline of culinary traditions.

Food Systems

I hope to see the food system progress within my lifetime to a more just, sustainable model. In the meantime, I write about the many ways it could be improved, from protecting the health of farm workers to preventing waste in the supply chain and increasing access to affordable food for everyone.

People + Environment

My B.A. in Environmental Analysis taught me how to evaluate the material world for clues into the symbolic. From sustainable design to factory farms, I explore how questions of sustainability impact society at large and the daily lives of different communities.
